Florissant

Florissant

Florissant, Colorado, is a community in Teller County that is home to about 100 people. Florissant is not far from the geographical center of the state, and it is situated along the western slope of Pikes Peak.

History

Florissant began as a mining camp in 1859. The gold rush brought the first miners and settlers into the area. One of the settlers was Judge James Costello. Since he was from Florrisant, Missouri, he saw to it that the fledgling community was named after his hometown. The French word "florissant" is a derivative of the verb "fleurir," which means to blossom or to flourish.

Parks and Recreation

Mueller State Park includes more than 5,000 acres of land in the shadow of Pikes Peak. There are over 50 miles of hiking trails as well as 19 miles of trails that are for equestrians and mountain bikers. Camping opportunities include traditional sites as well as three rustic cabins that can be rented. The largest of these can accommodate up to eight people.

Attractions and Activities

Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument is located just to the south of Florissant. The Eocene Period formations here have perfectly preserved many insects and plants as fossils. Thirty-four million years ago, volcanic ash interacted with lake elements to cause a significant algae bloom. As massive mats of algae sank to the bottom of the lake, they preserved any flora or fauna that had recently landed there. The petrified remains found here are also fascinating. Some petrified redwood stumps are 14 feet in diameter.

The Pike's Peak Area Historical Museum is just across from the post office. Visitors can learn about the early mining history of the area. Artifacts and exhibits help to transport them back in time to the 19th century. Fossils and mineral samples provide evidence of the unique geologic history of the region.

Events

The Motherlode Music Festival in nearby Lake George is an annual August event that lasts for three days. Numerous bands generate a festive atmosphere as vendors offer ample food and drink. On-site camping is offered at this festival.
